Organization
Requirements
All Music Education students are
required to be in a MAJOR organization a minimum of
eight semesters (designated below by an asterisk*).
See the appropriate curriculum checklist. Students in
other curricula should consult the appropriate curriculum
guide for specific requirements.
String majors must participate in Symphony Orchestra
for all eight semesters.
Guitar majors substitute Guitar Ensemble for their major
organization requirement.

Piano
Competency
Piano Competency for non-keyboard
majors is required for all Bachelor of Music candidates.
The Competency requirement may be met by:
a. Successfully completing PIA 102
OR
b. Demonstrating the ability to meet the following requirements:
Scales: All major and harmonic minor scales,hands together,two
octaves.
Cadences: The following cadence is to be learned in
the following keys,using pedal
(Chords in parentheses may be omitted,if desired): Major: C,
D, Deb, E, F, G, Ab, A, Bb Minor: c, d, e, f,
g, a
Keyboard Harmony:Harmonize two melodies at sight. One
will be in major,and one in minor. One melody will have
chord symbols given and one will not. The first position
of the cadence given above may be used for harmonization.
Sight Reading:A simple accompaniment impertinent to
the students curriculum. B. M. students will read
an accompaniment for his/her major instrument. Literature:Either
a memorized solo or an accompaniment played with music
which is appropriate to the student s curriculum.
If the student is currently taking lessons,the choice
should be at the discretion of the teacher.
Practice
Room Sign-out
Most practice rooms are available
on a first-come,first-served basis,but some rooms may
be signed out for regularly scheduled practice sessions.
The locked practice rooms may be reserved through the
School of Music Office during the first week of classes
of each semester. Failure to return keys at the end
of the semester will result in an academic hold being
placed on the student s records.
Students may sign out for no more than one block of
time on any one day;that is:one or two hours. Students
are expected to be in a practice room no later than
15 minutes after the scheduled period begins. Smoking,eating
or drinking in practice rooms is strictly prohibited.
