Dr. Burton is an internationally
recognized authority in the field of multicultural
music education. He is the author of several major
texts on Native American musical culture (Moving
Within the Circle: Contemporary Native American
Music and Dance, When the Earth Was Like New:
Western Apache Songs and Stories, Voices of the
Wind: Native American Flute Songs), a contributing
author to Multicultural Perspectives in Music
Education, 2nd Edition (Anderson and Campbell,
Editors), Making Connections: Multicultural Music
and the National Standards (Anderson and Moore,
Editors), The Sociology of Music Education (Roger
Rideout, Editor), Many Seeds Different
Flowers: The Music Education Legacy of Carl Orff
(Andre de Quadros, Editor), World Musics and Music
Education: Facing the Issues (Bennett Reimer,
Editor), eight volumes in the MENC Strategies
for Teaching Series, and other teaching anthologies.
In addition, he is regularly published in professional
journals around the world. He is a contributing
author for the Silver-Burdett Classroom music
basal series Making Music.
He has presented workshops and lectures
on world music in Europe, Asia Australia, Africa,
and the United States for such professional organizations
as Music Educators national Conference, International
Society for Ethnomusicology, American Orff-Schulwerk
Association and Organization of American Kodaly
Educators. Burton currently serves as Chair of
the Education Committee of the Society for Ethnomusicology,
the Executive Board of the Society for Music Teacher
Education, Association, Associate Editor for Scholars
Journal, Editorial board for Music Education International
and is a world music consultant for publishers
and composers throughout the world.
